Tuesday 11th March – skiing station de Mont min, Col de la Forclaz **** sunny periods

Relaxing start to the day, exercises overlooking the lake and mountains:) Even made some flapjack in the small pan!! The weather isn’t quite so clear today, a few more clouds but still nice. After breakfast we headed back towards the Col de la Forclaz. We parked and walked over to have a look at the view of the lake just above the hangglider take off and then wandered down the road looking at the birds in the trees – saw a goldcrest:) We were then amazed to find a tiny ski resort! It’s called the station de Mont min, Col de la Forclaz and was only 13 euros (£11) for the two of us to ski for 2 hours! It had to be done so we tried to get ready quickly. I decided to move the van and Mag said don’t run over the skis – I didn’t, just the step ladder again!!! We made our way our way to the tiny shed where you got your lift pass and could also hire skis. The lady was very nice and tried her English out on us, asking where we were from etc.. Mag asked if we could have a piste plan and they looked around and we thought they had decided we could look at the laminated one on the wall when the man came out and gave her what turned out to be a glasses cleaning cloth with the plan of the pistes printed on it!! She was absolutely thrilled and thanked him very much:) We decided that it was a family run thing with Granny in the booth, granddad and dad sharing the baby lift and the young teenage grandsons listening to the radio and having a crafty fag on the bigger lift!! Probably completely wrong but kept us amused:) We started off on the baby drag lift and moved over to the bigger one where there was a cracking blue run and a not so nice red. There were three blues, two reds and two greens in total with a border cross along the furthest edge which was closed. They had put a small slalom on one of the greens and some little jumps on the other so all in all it was a hugely entertaining way to spend a couple of hours:) When we were flying down the blue and Mag was going to follow my tracks – she got to the bottom and joked that my turns were restricting her freeriding style!!! There were three young brothers having great fun together and the older two, who were a lot better than their younger brother, were really great at waiting for him and giving him advice:) I did go over to see if I could help when the oldest one had a spectacular fall while his mum was watching!! When our time was nearly up we went up the lift, took our skis off and walked over to have a look at the view of the mountains and the lake (from somebody’s drive!). The mountains behind us are amazing. We had our lunch in the car park then drove on to the village of Montmin but the road was closed after that due to major roadworks. Turned back and after taking some photos of a lovely mossy waterfall at the side of the road we took the turning to the Ermitage St. Germaine which is above where we parked last night. We had a walk to the tunnel below the church which is a shrine and then up to the view point. Spectacular views of the lake and mountains and the small castle which juts out into the lake. Walked back to the van and I moved forward a bit, parked in a gap in the trees only just wide enough for the van and decided this was where we were staying tonight. Mag didn’t think it was a very good idea because it is right behind the church and graveyard and the Ermitage is a school for priests so she didn’t think it seemed right. She would rather have gone back to where we were last night but anyway we stayed and so far we are ok! Had carbonara for tea then went for a walk in the dark to see if the castle over the lake is lit up (it isn’t). Very bright moon so didn’t really need the torch!
